When the saints are round the throne? God will be waiting at the altar God will be waiting at the beautiful golden gate I wanna move on up a little higher. Move on up a little higher Spoken Word excerpts from Monument Eternal by Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda “ One of the greatest mysteries hidden behind the scenes of human intelligence is the existence of an unconditional state of perfection. In truth, it is a state which surpasses genius or the highest forms of intelligence imaginable it is a state of perfect peace which is unchecked and unlimited by time and place. It is a state in which a truly liberated soul knows that it is a part of the great cosmic body of the Universe. This perfection and freedom can be experienced not only in the heaven worlds, outside or around the Universe but right here on earth.” The Lord's prayer excerpts in Hebrew /German and English (Eternity's PIllar broadcast 1989-Alice Coltrane producer)

Carry On 04:18
Listen to what the Feminine spirit says: Carry On Born in the shadows For so long Knew about the root women Heard their song Voices flung up to heaven Faith was their might And the sacred secret of life Help them to Carry on Carry on, Carry on, Carry on Sister’s songs as moans and sorrows untold Music scales from homelands Not to be seen no more Snatched from their roots For evil abuse But their spirits still held the truth and they Carried on All the women you hear them pray about the things they could not Wouldn’t speak out loud to no one Listened to the soul within and they carried on Using faith they would pray in the ancestors way Working their fingers to the bones With backs bend over, no rest and no real home Yet yo could hear them humming and praising God all day long They carried on

about

ltimately, it’s a collection of music that bolsters the spirit by lovingly and respectfully focusing the listener on the most high.

Through her distinctive vocals as well as novel choices of instrumentation, Radha Botofasina has infused the well travelled repertoire with a delightful freshness.

A formidable amount of song craft and musicianship is deployed on this album, but always in service of the spirituals’ message of praise and/or perseverance.

In the opening number (“Satan We Gonna Tear Your Kingdom Down”) Botofasina’s own skillful harp work delivers sounds that are reminiscent of the West African kora.  These sounds blend beautifully with Gemi Taylor’s bluesy acoustic guitar, John Barnes ethereal synth pads, the shuffle of brushes on snare, and the leaders distinctive vocal timbres.  The background vocals of the McCrary Sisters punctuate the final minute of this powerful opener.

The album proceeds with a spirited version of “I Know The Lord Laid His Hands On Me”.  The upbeat chorus is foreshadowed by Alma Cielo’s earthy viola. A joyful call and response then ensues that bounces atop John Lehman’s buoyant piano and the background vocalists’ (Aankha Neal, Isabel Beyoso, Arianna Gouveia and Shyam Tony Reyes) enthusiastic hand claps.  Here and elsewhere on the record, Munyungo Jackson’s cajon brings to mind the wooden floors of a small rural church.  Another savvy choice of instruments that leads to satisfying results.

Next is the engaging story of the “Woman At The Well” told with a similar ensemble albeit performed at a slightly more relaxed tempo that suites the unfolding of the story.  Following the first verse, Jeffrey Connors enters on bass along with the rest of the rhythm section (Lehman and Jackson) and lays the foundation for the interplay between the impassioned lead and background vocals.

Track number four is an exhilarating reading of “My Soul Gonna Shine”.  This version is driven by a low end tour de force of electric bass (Cecil McBee Jr.), two baritone saxes (Geoff Gallegos and Matthew DeMerritt), trombone (Lemar Guillary) and not one, not two, but three tubas (Richard Antoine White, Devon Taylor and Mark T. Bolin)!  The brilliantly syncopated arrangement really allows the vocals - both lead and background - to soar and convey the emotion at the heart of the song.

“Going Back With Jesus” is the longest tune on the album and marks it’s half way point.  It’s a soulful interpretation that begins with a beautifully prayerful rubato intro comprised of piano, lush strings and voices concluding seven and a half minutes later in a slow, spare Afro Latin rhythm.  It’s a journey that is gorgeous from top to bottom.  This is due to the the leader’s skillful arrangement of the background vocals and blended with Mayreni Morel and Geoff Gallegos equally skilled string arrangement.

The sound of the organ shows up less than one might expect on a contemporary recording of spirituals.  However, the instrument does make a well paced (and well played) appearance on “Mary Don’t You Weep”.  It’s heard in conjunction with the late John Lehman’s lively piano and riding on top of more tasteful afro-latin percussion from Munyungo Jackson.  The organ is played by Botofasina’s son, Surya.  This instrumentation (along with Radha’s harp, Cecil’s bass and the joyous background vocals) provide the backdrop for the lead vocals to transform this seasoned work into a crisp, up-to-date offering of hope.
